Migraine & Headache
Biofeedback and neurofeedback can reduce vulnerability to headache and migraine
by training the nervous system towards healthier, fitter and more optimal functioning.
Neurofeedback for Migraine & Headache
Neurofeedback measures changes in brain activity, and by feeding this information
back via computer helps the brain recover its natural flexibility and capacity for self-regulation.
York Biofeedback Centre offers
HEG neurofeedback and
Low Energy Neurofeedback System (LENS),
both of which have a track record of helping migraines.
Biofeedback for Headache & Migraine
Both headaches and migraines are known to be exacerbated by stress, if not actually
caused by it. Biofeedback trains stress-related parameters such as breathing, muscle tension and
Heart Rate Coherence towards more optimal states, and - especially when combined with cognitve and
behavioural psychotherapy techniques - gives you the skills and resources to cope
more effectively with stressors.
Migraine and Headache
Headaches have been traditionally classed as tension-type or migraine.
Migraines differ in respect of:
- more intense pain which is resistant to pain killlers
- pulsing or pounding pain, rather than constant
- more localised pain
- often accompanied by other symptoms such as sickness, nausea or visual effects.
About Migraine
Migraines are still not well understood. Research suggests they are associated with
hyperexcitable brains. There are numerous possible triggers including foods, allergens, toxins, and stress.
Migraines often occur as "rebound" effects of stress.
Hyperventilation Syndrome
Hyperventilation syndrome is a constellation of symptoms caused by habitual
over-breathing, including chronic headache and migraine. Hyperventilation starves the brain of oxygen
by (i) causing constriction in brain arteries and (ii) affecting blood acidity leading to the blood not releasing
its oxygen.
