What Is Biofeedback?
How you think and feel
is reflected in the way your body operates, and
vice versa. For example the graphic below shows a clear difference
in the way that heart rate varies over a five-minute
period, in two states: anxiety and tranquillity.
By monitoring your body's constantly changing responses and
feeding this information back via computer, biofeedback allows you to
- become aware of and understand stress responses
- learn to recreate the physiological conditions for
positive and resourceful states.
How Does Biofeedback Help?
All learning requires feedback - you need to know when you are moving
in the right direction. Relaxation techniques become so much more
effective and easy to master when you can see and feel the effects
of your thoughts and actions.
Biofeedback is self-empowering - you're not the passive recipient
of treatment. Because the benefits come from learning, and from
creating awareness:
- biofeedback is a safe, non-invasive therapy
- the effects of biofeedback training are lasting
