What Is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback is a powerful tool for developing mind-body awareness and
self-regulation - vital aspects of emotional intelligence.
How you think and feel
is reflected in the way your body operates, and
vice versa. For example the graphics (right) show a clear difference
in the way that heart rate varies over a five-minute
period, in two states: anxiety and tranquillity.
Biofeedback works by monitoring your body's constantly changing responses and
feeding this information back via computer, so that you can:
- You can become aware of
how your body responds to even fleeting mental states - you can see changes in the
feedback
as they happen
- This opens up the possibility of natural, spontaneous learning, unmediated by
the thinking, judging mind.
- You can learn
to change your mental state by embodying a particular physiological state.
What Can We Measure?
We need parameters which are convenient to measure, reflect mental and emotional states,
and are relatively easy to influence. The pages in this section describe some of
the parameters I use.
How Does Biofeedback Help?
Biofeedback is self-empowering - you're not the passive recipient
of treatment. Because the benefits come from learning:
- biofeedback is a safe, non-invasive therapy
- the benefits of biofeedback training are lasting.
Renting Biofeedback Devices for Home Practice
I'm able to rent powerful multi-modal devices for home use, so that you can
practice and hone your developing skills.
"Working with biofeedback has helped me dramatically reduce the severity
of mood swings, and to achieve real improvements in both my work and family life."
